FAQ’s
-
You wouldn't climb Mount Everest without a guide, right? Birth is no different!
Labor doulas are birth experts who can help you meaningfully prepare for birth. Having a labor doula present has been shown to significantly improve labor outcomes, reduce interventions, and increase overall birth satisfaction. Learn more about the evidence for doulas here.
-
Labor doulas are nonmedical professionals who work alongside you and your birth team. While your OB and/or midwife provides medical care, your labor doula provides mental, emotional, physical, and/or spiritual support during pregnancy, labor, and immediately after birth.
Mental - providing evidence-based information and resources, supporting a calm and distraction-free environment
Emotional - reciting birth affirmations, reminding you of your birth preferences, encouraging authentic emotional expression (laughter, tears, etc.)
Physical - offering massage, counterpressure, alternative labor positions, snacks, and hydration; supporting baby's first feeding
Spiritual - honoring religious customs, praying, supporting modesty, creating a safe space for worship/meditation
Labor doulas DO NOT do cervical checks, catch babies, give medical advice, interpret test results, or make medical decisions on your behalf.
-
Technically, none. While most states currently do not require any training/education to work as a labor doula, it's encouraged that families hire doulas who are trained or certified. This ensures that your doula can offer current, evidence-based information and fully understands their scope of practice.
-
Honestly, yes!
Labor doulas are trained to give both partners the tools they need to have a positive birth experience. This includes educating nonbirthing partners on how to meaningfully support their loved one. A labor doula doesn't replace a supportive partner but rather enhances their presence.
Often overlooked is the fact that partners are experiencing birth too! They are equally deserving of support and encouragement.
-
Absolutely!
As long as there is a provider present (i.e. OB and/or midwife) to oversee your medical care, I am happy to support clients in whatever environment they feel most comfortable.
